SCELZI WINS THE BOB’S BURGERS & BREW SUMMER NATIONALS

Alger, WA (7/29/23) – Dominic Scelzi wins the 33rd annual Bob’s Burgers & Brew Summer Nationals and took home $13,500 over Seth Bergman and Jason Solwold Saturday, July 29th at Skagit Speedway.

Scelzi started outside row one with Trey Starks to his inside. Starks got out to the initial lead on the drop of the green flag pulling ahead of Scelzi with ease. As the race progressed and Starks started to get into lap traffic, he managed to get around the first few cars easily but once he got into thicker lap traffic Scelzi was able to close. With cars running both lanes in front of Starks he had nowhere to go but to sit behind them and wait for an opening, this allowed Scelzi to make up a lot of time lost.

Starks was strong on the bottom through lap traffic forcing the 41 of Scelzi to have to run high if he was going to get around Starks and that is exactly what he did. Scelzi rim rode through one and two with 19 laps to go and then through three and four Starks missed his line on the bottom allowing Scelzi to make the pass on the top for the win.

“Man, I was hustling,” Scelzi said. “It was really cowboy up; the curb was massive. We had a really good start and when I got behind Trey I kinda felt like I was pacing him decent. We got into traffic, you know I think it was one of those things where being in second was a little bit better. I could try the bottom and top. We both were pretty good on the bottom, I don’t remember how I passed him anymore, I was sending a text message to my dog, and I must have missed when I got by him. But we were really good.”

Action and drama aplenty filled the Hornet Nationals A-Main, but Brian Michelson was able to survive it all to get the win and $700! Michelson started second but got to the lead early, getting around Mike Guffey after the opening lap. Michelson held the lead for seven laps before the 007 of Guffey found a way back around using the bottom side of turns one and two.

Guffey who looked to have the faster car started to drive away after that until drama struck for him. The rear bumper cover of the 007 machine started falling off and drag on the track before inevitably a part of it fell onto the racetrack. Guffey was given a mechanical black flag thus awarding the lead to Steve Peters who had gotten by Michelson earlier. Peters however only led one lap before Michelson got around him because the right rear axle on Peters’ car snapped. Once everything was said and done Michelson remained out front to take home his first Hornet Nationals win.

“Oh my god,” Michelson said with relief in his voice. “Yes! All I could sit there, and think was everything has to go right. I got run over a bit but that’s fine it's racing. I gave a little, he gave a little and then once I realized I got to go when the V8 [Steve Peters] was basically losing his wheel at that point I figured its lights out.”
