COLLEGE & KIDS NIGHT - JUNE 7
It's time for College and Kids at Skagit Speedway this Saturday, June 7; all students get in for $5 with proof of school ID. The 360 Sprint Cars are back in action, along with the Sportsman Sprint Cars and the CGE Garage Midgets.
For the second weekend in a row, the 360 Sprint Cars will light up Skagit Speedway with racing action. A thrilling feature a weekend ago saw what would have been a dominant win for Robbie Price slip away in the last corner. Price entered turns three and four on the high side, allowing Trey Starks, who was running second, to point his car to the bottom side of turns three and four and drive around Price to steal the victory on the last lap. Price had led since lap three, but his first win of the year will have to wait. Starks picked up his second win of the season in the 360 Sprint Car division and the 22nd win of his 360 career at Skagit Speedway. He is second on the all time win list since 2010.
Starks maintains his points lead in the 360s by 32 points over second place Colby Thornhill and 36 points over third place Jesse Schlotfeldt. Both Thornhill and Schlotfeldt have finished in the top five during the three races run so far. This Saturday's 360 race is also part of the 360 Summer Challenge Series. The Summer Challenge series consists of six races, alternating between Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma, WA, and Skagit Speedway. The first race was at Grays Harbor Raceway on May 17. Eleven cars took part in the first race with Schlotfeldt leading the points battle after the night concluded. Qualifying and the A-Main took place however heat races were waived due to weather. Colton Heath sits in second, only one point behind Schlotfeldt, while Levi Hillier sits third, 12 points behind Jesse, who has 107 total points.
Points will be awarded for qualifying, heat races, and the main event. After completing the six races, drivers who attempt to start all six will be eligible for the $6,000 points fund. Money is paid out to the top five drivers at the end of the six races. Last year's champion was Cam Smith, with Heath in second and Levi Klatt in third.
The Sportsman Sprint Cars are back this Saturday, after being off last weekend. The Sportsmans will now run three races in the next two weeks before taking a break for the 53rd Annual Jim Raper Memorial Super Dirt Cup Presented by Angel of the Winds Casino Resort. However, through two races, Jesson Jacobson has been victorious in both. Jacobson was lights out from the drop of the green flag on qualifying. He and Payton Drake turned in identical times of 12.940; however, Jacobson was awarded quicktime due to the time on his other lap compared to Drake. Jesson won his heat race and led all 25 laps of the main event to capture a nice $1,100 payday. Jacobson leads the points battle with 243 total points. He is 24 points ahead of second place Jayden Whitney and 36 points ahead of Drake and Macie Logsdon, who are tied for third.
For the third weekend in a row, the CGE Garage Midgets are back at Skagit Speedway. Through the opening two races, two different drivers have won. Shane Smith won on opening night, while Tristin Thomas parked it in victory lane last Saturday, May 31. Smith led the opening 21 circuits before Thomas got around him to lead lap 22. Thomas had been hounding the back bumper of Smith before making an aggressive move to take the lead in turns three and four. Smith was never able to get close enough to fight back after getting passed. Smith still leads the driver's points battle with 213 points over second place Ryan Orchard, who is 22 points behind, and Michael Vollbrecht, who is 29 points behind first place.
