“Hell Yeah, We Won Dirt Cup, Let’s Go!” - Starks Wins Dirt Cup 53

Alger, WA - The headline says it all as Trey Starks took the win in the 53rd annual Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup presented by Angel of the Winds Casino Resort. Between the top prize and lap led money, Starks banked $111,626.26 in total payout.

Starks and James McFadden led the field to the initial green flag, which was called back due to a false start. Start number also didn’t stick, with Jesse Schlotfeldt looping his car in turn two. The third start was good and it was Starks bolting to the lead and building his advantage in the early stages of the races. Tanner Holmes scooted past McFadden on lap seven to take over second and with Starks in traffic, rapidly closed the gap between them. A slidejob in turn two on lap 14 gave Holmes the lead before a yellow for a slowing Justin Peck brought the field back together. On the restart, Robbie Price and Caeden Steele got together which brought out a red flag and an open red for the 26 car field. Starks made an unusual change on the open red, instructing his team to dig into the fuel system of the car to change the performance of his engine. After his crew changed multiple aspects of the fueling, Starks’ car came to life, showing improved speed on the ensuing restart. Holmes was able to keep Trey at bay on lap 17, but a slidejob on lap 18 saw Starks make what was the race winning pass coming out of turn two. Traffic got heavy at times, but from there forward Trey was not seriously challenged as he drove to the win and the huge payday. With the win, Starks becomes the third Skagit Speedway Triple Crown champion, joining Jason Solwold and Shane Stewart as drivers to have won Dirt Cup, Summer Nationals and the Labor Day Weekend national touring event (named Skagit Nationals in recent years). Holmes took home a strong second place finish, with McFadden holding third. Starks also won the Dick Wilskey Pole Award by winning the Pole Shuffle. Qualifiers to set the A and B Main lineups were won by Scott Bogucki, Colton Heath, McFadden and Jason Solwold. Max Mittry won the B Main. Sean Becker was hard charger in the A Feature, advancing 9 spots.

Ryan Orchard doubled up on the weekend by taking the finale of the CGE Garage Midgets on Saturday night. After winning his first career main on Thursday, Orchard led all 25 laps of tonight’s main while under heavy pressure from Alex Peck the whole way. Peck would lose second place on the last lap to Tanner Holm, settling for a third place finish.

69 cars competed at Skagit Speedway on Saturday night with the night coming to a close at 10:37pm.
